Hagius Sports Studio: Where Mind and Body Connect
Concept and Restoration
Gonzalez Haase Architects collaborated with brothers Nicolas and Timothy Hagius to realize Hagius Sports Studio, a sanctuary where mind and body intertwine seamlessly. Situated within a historic post office dating back to 1902, the 600 m2 space underwent a meticulous restoration, resulting in neutral interiors designed to cultivate a serene environment that transcends the distractions of modern life.
Holistic Design Approach
Central to the studio’s philosophy is the integration of light, sound, and aroma stimulation to support the circadian rhythm and enhance overall well-being. Structural elements were selectively removed to establish two primary axes that span the length of the building, intersecting at the reception area. Matte stainless-steel panels at each axis terminus reflect light, while custom sound equipment and incense installations offer sensory prompts tailored to individual needs.
Materiality and Texture
The design ethos embraces raw and unfinished materials, including untreated aluminium, maple, granite, linen, and burlap, to evoke a tactile experience that accentuates the physicality of the space. Walls, towering over 4 meters high, feature horizontal divisions with contrasting paint textures. The interplay of matte and glossy surfaces captures the dynamism of human movement, enhancing the fluidity of activity within the studio.
Naturalistic Aesthetics
In adherence to the studio’s commitment to authenticity, no concealed coatings or treated surfaces were utilized in the design. Each material retains its natural hue or original production color, contributing to an environment that fosters a return to one’s innate state. Pierre Jorge Gonzalez emphasizes the deliberate complexity underlying the seemingly tranquil space, derived from unconventional surfaces and material juxtapositions.
Tailored Environments
Distinct aesthetic identities define individual spaces within the studio, catering to specific training or treatment needs. Bio-dynamic lighting systems, custom-designed to emit adjustable cool and warm light, adapt to varying training types and time-of-day requirements. Reflective metallic film ceilings further enhance the ambience, casting silver or gold hues depending on the observer’s perspective.
Fusion of Form and Function
Custom-crafted elements, such as polished stainless-steel grids for boxing glove storage, embody the fusion of form and function, seamlessly integrating utility with interior aesthetics. For Pierre Jorge Gonzalez, functionality is intrinsically linked to beauty, akin to the harmony found in a well-equipped chef’s kitchen.
In essence, Hagius Sports Studio epitomizes a holistic approach to design, where architectural elements converge to facilitate physical and mental well-being, fostering a sense of harmony and tranquility amidst the chaos of contemporary life.
