TEC H.C. Ørsted Gymnasium: Inspiring Curiosity in Education

Sweco Architects presents the TEC H.C. Ørsted Gymnasium, an 8,000 sqm technical upper secondary school located in Lyngby, northwest of Copenhagen. Named after the renowned Danish scientist who discovered electromagnetism, the school aims to be an active participant in the teaching process, fostering inspiration and curiosity among both students and educators.

Architectural Inspiration

Drawing inspiration from the scientific legacy of H.C. Ørsted, the building’s design pays homage to electromagnetic coils, symbolizing the connection between electricity and magnetism. Stacked rounded volumes housing classrooms, labs, and meeting spaces form the interior structure, extending to the facade to create a cohesive architectural expression.

Dynamic Learning Spaces

The heart of the building is a triple-height main hall, illuminated by daylight refracted through louvered surfaces, offering a versatile space for social events and gatherings. The arrangement of coils on different floors shapes learning environments, transitioning from traditional corridors to adaptable spaces that promote collaboration and teamwork.

Material Selection

The facade’s lamellas, chosen for their reference to H.C. Ørsted’s discoveries, evoke curiosity and stimulate inquiry into interdisciplinary connections in the scientific realm. Additionally, the building’s expression varies depending on the viewer’s perspective, with the structure serving as a towering landmark visible from the Helsingør motorway and integrating harmoniously with adjacent residential areas.

Conclusion

TEC H.C. Ørsted Gymnasium embodies a commitment to innovation and educational excellence, providing a dynamic environment that encourages curiosity and exploration. Through thoughtful design and architectural symbolism, the school not only honors the legacy of H.C. Ørsted but also inspires future generations of students and visitors alike.
