Embracing Nature’s Beauty

Wagstaffe House stands as a testament to the dream of living amidst nature, with sweeping views of the water and lush greenery. Designed by buck&simple, the layout of the house is divided into public and private wings, creating a raised courtyard that offers both a breathtaking view and a sanctuary from the elements.

Seizing Opportunities

The site presented numerous opportunities with its north-facing aspect, offering stunning views of Brisbane Waters and captivating afternoon sunsets bouncing off the nearby rocky ridgeline. Reflecting a common desire for a sea or green change, the clients sought to immerse themselves in their surroundings and lead a lifestyle more attuned to the natural world.

Natural Harmony

Wagstaffe House exudes warmth and tranquility, owing much to the abundant natural light and the thoughtful selection of materials. The architects opted for tactile materials that celebrate their inherent textures. Recycled brick, concrete, and blackbutt timber form a harmonious palette that imbues the home with a sense of familiarity and comfort.

Elevated Elegance

To preserve the water views, the house is elevated, with a solid brick courtyard creating an artificial ground plane accessible from the upper-floor living areas. The visual weightiness of the courtyard is balanced by the modest timber top floor, featuring a twin-pitched roof layout that forms the elevated courtyard. Outdoor activities and furniture are cleverly situated between the structures, ensuring uninterrupted views from within the house.

Subtle Elegance Internally

Internally, the design palette is characterized by texture and subtlety. Plasterboard is eschewed in favor of white-painted timber to enhance light penetration, while transitions between materials like concrete and brick signify shifts between public and private spaces. This nuanced approach to materiality creates a cohesive and inviting interior environment.

Conclusion

Wagstaffe House epitomizes a harmonious blend of architecture and nature, offering its residents a serene retreat immersed in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. With its thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail, this home serves as a sanctuary where one can truly connect with the essence of the natural world.
