Located just an hour’s drive east of Bangkok in Chachoengsao, Villa Backyard offers a tranquil retreat amidst the bustling city life, factories, and the sea. Situated on non-terrain land with an artificial pond, this villa provides an oasis of calm in an otherwise saline environment.
Sustainable Design Approach
The man-made pond serves not only as a visual centerpiece but also as a crucial part of the water treatment process. To combat soil salinity and transform the brackish water into freshwater, rainwater is collected to dilute the existing pond water. TOUCH Architect integrates this water treatment process seamlessly into the villa’s design, with a simple yet innovative approach.
Architectural Response
The architecture of Villa Backyard is designed to support and enhance the water treatment process. A cube-shaped structure is diagonally slashed in half, creating a large slanted cantilevered surface that acts as both a roof and a wall for draining water. This design not only serves practical purposes but also provides a small, affordable, and sustainable living space for a single-family residence.
Flexible Living Spaces
The villa features an open-plan living space that can be easily adapted for various purposes, from family gatherings to dining and sleeping areas. The water-side edge of the villa, where the bedroom and outdoor terrace are located, is designed to provide shade and hierarchical openness. Different levels of openness allow for panoramic views and a connection to nature from every angle.
Sustainable Materials and Features
Durable aluminum trellises provide heat protection, while a steel structure with an asphalt shingle roof ensures quick installation and durability. Steel grating on the outdoor terrace allows rainwater to fall directly into the pond, contributing to natural cooling through evaporation. The use of aluminum trellises not only adds to the durability of the structure but also allows for easy re-use in future projects.
