Integrating Nature and Experience UPI Shop in Omotesando by Happenstance Collective [HaCo]
Context and Inspiration
Situated in the bustling retail area of Omotesando in Tokyo, the UPI Shop presented an opportunity for Happenstance Collective [HaCo] to explore the intersection of nature, retail, and human experience. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of online shopping, the project sought to address the growing desire for a meaningful connection with nature.
Redefining Retail Experience
In response to the evolving retail landscape, the UPI Shop aimed to offer more than just a place to purchase outdoor goods. Instead, it sought to create an immersive environment where customers could engage with nature firsthand. Drawing inspiration from nature and anthropology museums, the shop was designed to be a diorama-like space, encouraging exploration and interaction.
The Landscape Area
The shop’s interior was divided into two distinct areas: the “landscape area” and the “display area.” The landscape area, designed to mimic the outdoors, featured ever-changing vegetation, canopy shadows, and the soothing sound of a stream. Lighting elements simulated different times of the day, while air fans ensured a gentle breeze reminiscent of nature.
The Display Area
In contrast to the organicity of the landscape area, the display area embraced order and repetition. Wooden tool-boards served as the primary display surfaces, showcasing both selling goods and personal artifacts collected by UPI’s team. The construction was kept simple and honest, reminiscent of camping structures, with a focus on minimalism and functionality.
Fusion of Architecture and Nature
The architecture of the UPI Shop seamlessly blended with its natural surroundings. Concrete walls became part of the landscape, while wooden tool-boards added warmth and texture to the space. Simple round tables and stools, crafted from natural materials, further enhanced the connection between architecture and nature.
Human-Centric Approach
Throughout the design process, UPI’s human-driven approach to nature remained paramount. Craftsmen were involved in producing onsite furniture, emphasizing authenticity and craftsmanship. By prioritizing the human experience and connection to nature, the UPI Shop reimagined the traditional retail space as a place of exploration, inspiration, and shared experiences.
