Maximizing Space The Stendhal Apartment by miogui

Maximizing Space The Stendhal Apartment by miogui

Introduction

miogui was tasked with refurbishing the Stendhal Apartment in Paris’s 20th arrondissement, following their successful renovation of a studio in the same building. With a focus on maximizing space and light, miogui aimed to create a sense of spaciousness within the compact interior.

Creating Illusions of Space

To address the challenge of limited space, miogui took several strategic design measures. They demolished the bathroom wall to reintroduce a second window into the living area, enhancing natural light and spatial flow. Additionally, they covered an entire wall with mirrors to create the illusion of an expanded room, further enhancing the perception of space.

Embracing Geometry and Abstraction

Drawing inspiration from their experiences in Japan, miogui incorporated geometric shapes and abstract design elements to blur the boundaries of space and dimensions. Strong geometrical shapes guided the layout and detailing of the apartment, while every design choice served multiple functions to optimize functionality within the limited space.

Playing with Perception

Through clever design choices, miogui manipulated perception to amplify the sense of space. Hidden door frames and carefully placed mirrors created visual illusions of larger dimensions, while small mosaic details in the bathroom multiplied joints to enhance the feeling of openness.

Raw Materials and Structural Integrity

miogui embraced the raw beauty of materials such as concrete, metal, and plywood, revealing the structural elements of the apartment to create a balanced contrast with the clean, white interior. This approach not only added visual interest but also established a connection between the apartment and its architectural heritage.

Balancing Functionality and Aesthetics

Working within the constraints of existing structures and irregularities, miogui prioritized functionality while maintaining a meticulous attention to detail. Collaboration with craftsmen was essential in adapting to unexpected discoveries and ensuring the realization of the design vision.

Endless Possibilities

The Stendhal Apartment exemplifies miogui’s commitment to minimalist design principles, natural light, and attention to detail. Despite the challenges of working within small spaces, the project showcases the endless possibilities for creative transformation and spatial optimization within compact urban dwellings.
